Home care for dialysis patients in India

Dialysis in India is a calendar. Three days a week the parent leaves the house. The other days the house has to hold the swelling, the diet, and the tiredness. In Kolkata that may mean a morning trip from Behala or Dum Dum to a centre, then a long rest. In Durgapur or Asansol the centre may be farther. In Siliguri families sometimes plan the whole day around one session. Home care sits in the gaps.

What help at home is for

A nurse can check blood pressure, look at the fistula or catheter site, and help with medicines the nephrology note already named. An attendant can help the parent eat a smaller meal and walk to the toilet without a fall. A lab test at home saves one extra queue on a non-dialysis morning. None of this replaces the dialysis chair. It keeps the days between chairs from turning into another admission.

A walk-up in North Kolkata is different from a lift in New Town. A rented room near a factory in Asansol is different from a family house in Burdwan. The caregiver has to see the stairs, the water, and whether the parent can climb after a session. Families who already use nursing at home in Kolkata often add it only on dialysis evenings at first. When home is not enough

Fever, shaking, bleeding from the access, chest pain, or sudden shortness of breath belong in a hospital, not in another glass of water. If you are unsure, call for a doctor at home only when the parent can wait safely. Otherwise go in.
